Championship Favourites

Post by Joe on Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:57 pm

According to Ladbrokes, Birmingham, QPR and Reading are favorites to win the league, with Palace and Derby with an outside chance.

Blackpool, Barnsley and Doncaster are all favorites to face the drop.

Barnsley should be fine in my opinion, i was tipping them for a top 6 spot.

I also think QPR will be a let down, they haven't spent as much money as expected and in my opinion chose the wrong manager in Iain Dowie.

My prediction....

1. Derby
2. Crystal Palace
PO. Cardiff

22. Plymouth
23. Blackpool
24. Doncaster

Reading should do well. They're a disciplined side who proved themselves in their first season in the Prem. Birmingham should also do well.

Honestly, it would be a once in a lifetime occurrence but I can see the three relegated teams (Birmingham, Reading, and Derby) jumping right back into the Prem while the three promoted sides (West Brom, Hull, and Stoke) could go straight back down.

Just for the record, Burnley have signed Chris Eagles from United.
A cracking signing for any CCC team in my opinion.

From a United fans' perspective, Eagles isn't as good as people make him out to be. He's always looked superficially good in United preseasons because of the players that are around him (it's easy to play well when Michael Carrick is passing the ball to you).

However, the Championship is probably a more suitable place for him. Best of luck to him.

Haha, yes, all United fans will remember that goal forever. It was the game that won us the title! The best part about that goal was how Eagles looked like he was on the verge of falling down. Looked like Bambi on ice.

Birmingham are the favourites to take the title. I also think Wolves could be in or around the top, certainly in the play offs this year. But the championship is generally too unpredictable, it is always really bunched up and anyone given a few good results could put their name forward for promotion.

Birmingham, 3 wins from 3 games, looking good for promotion in my eyes. But we'll jave to see how they do when Phillips isnt at his best. Have they got enough in reserve..

now that we are in the second half of the season, what does everybody think about the promotion and relegation battle?

Promotion:
1. Wolves
2. Reading
3. Burnley (surprise pick)

Relegation:
22. Derby (surprise pick)
23. Southampton
24. Charlton

I doubt this is going to happen, but I was just looking at the Championship standings and Cardiff could legitimately take the 2nd spot outright. They have a pretty soft schedule left and they have 4 games in hand! If they won all four of those games they would be tied for first place! I don't know if they have it in them, but they are definitely a team to watch over the rest of the season.

I'd be ecstatic to see Cardiff in the Prem, but I don't see it happening. It would be extremely difficult to win all four games in hand.

Another reason why Cardiff may have what it takes is their goal differential. It is 3rd best in the league, so I see that as another potential boost up the standings.

All I'm going to say is that Cardiff mean business! They drew Wolves AWAY in their last match, which is a huge for them. They still have 4 games in hand on most of the teams above them, plus they are already in one of the playoff spots. Make sure you all keep your eyes on them because they are certainly a team to watch down the stretch.

As they stand looks like it will be Wolves winning the title, looking pretty unassailable right now. Birmingham lying in second also look good with reading a further 7 points back. But remember Reading's two games in hand, and Cardiff's 4 games, which, even though they are 7th, 12 points off Birmingham, could leave them in second if they win them all. Reading's form right now isn't good however and the fixture list will surely take it's toll on Cardiff. This is how i see it finishing right now:

1. Wolves
2. Birmingham
3. Reading
4. Cardiff

See a good play-off competition between Reading and Cardiff.

With 2 games in hand still on most of the competition...Cardiff look as though they should secure a playoff spot relatively easily.

don't jump to conclusions though as i did. 4 of their 8 remaining matches are against teams in the top 10. sure they have a few extremely easy games left as well...but it won't be easy.

do you guys think they will make it into the playoffs?

With 5/6 games left for each team, the top 6 teams looks like this:

1. Wolves (77pts)
2. Birmingham (75)
3. Sheff Utd (72)
4. Reading (69) game in hand
5. Cardiff (67) game in hand
6. Burnley (66)

i don't expect anything unexpected to happen because Burnley is 4 pts up on Preston who are in 7th. I think the top 6 will stay like this, now it's all about jockeying for position.

Who will be promoted from this group?

I am going to pick Wolves, Birmingham, and i'm sticking with Cardiff as well!

I honestly don't know. I'd love Birmingham to get promoted automatically, but i've watched them for years and know they like to do everything awkwardly. I'll reserve judgement till after tonight's and tomorrow's games. Wolves are currently easily beating a unbelievably poor Southampton side, they should be secure in the top two now. Two more wins out of 4 should be enough.

Two out of the three teams to be joining the Premier League next season has been settled then, with the top two spots going to Wolverhampton and Birmingham (Very Happy). So all we're left with from the Championship is the lottery of the play-offs:
Reading started the season in fine form, looked like they would easily secure an automatic promotion berth. Lovely attacking play, but weak at the back however. This was evident later in the season where the goals trailed off and so did the results. They will play Burnley who have been consistent all season, and will certainly be the underdogs in the play-offs. Don't write them off though, I pick them to beat Reading to make the final. In the other tie we have the late chargers. Sheffield Utd, who seemed to come out of nowhere to all of a sudden be right up in the automatic promotion chase, and Preston, who were there or thereabouts all season long but only secured it with two vital wins from two in the last two games (inc a win at Brimingham from a goal down). This one could go either way with the winner probably getting that 3rd promotion slot.
