Tv Rights to Premier Matches

Post by Blackburnbob on Wed Feb 04, 2009 5:28 am

I know this maybe doesn't affect a lot of you guys stateside (or maybe it does?) The bidding for the rights have got underway again and Sky have got the main share till 2013, with 2 other packages going under the hammer later, of which sky can only bid on one, apparently the other partys bidding will be Setanta and ESPN. I have Sky but don't pay for sports when i can view somewhere else cheaper or free, i don't subscribe to Setanta at all and i don't get ESPN. My point through all this is the cash side of things, if i subscribed to Sky Sports it would cost me an extra £10 a month which is about $20 i believe, so you think ok that's fair, but you get charged pay per view on the big matches so what the hell am i paying for? Also not guaranteed your own clubs matches as they buy bundle tv deals which can eb any match. Setanta used to be pay per view only now thats subscription based too abotu £15 a month i believe, why the hell do i have to pay more to watch football??? ESPN i don't know if that's subscription based or not, if not i will find a way to watch it they win one of the other "auctions".

Rant rant rant, the bottom point for me is.....when i was a kid i used to watch what was then "division 1" football on standard terrestrial tv for nothing, how greedy has the world become, when i can't even watch a football game without paying the earth for it! Saying that ITV does have the Pool derby on tonight which is good, nice to see terrestrial channel got a couple of good cup matches!

i know what you mean mate. i remember watching prem footy on the bbc. now sky has taken it over. I feel it should be on regular television. maybe not the whole season, but at least half should be.

i think all of the matches should be on regular television. football is such a huge thing worldwide. allowing it to be on regular television would help to cut down somewhat with illegal streaming and lawsuits with myP2P and other sites because more people would be able to watch the matches they want to watch.

What makes me wonder, as a supporter of Rovers who don't have the largest fanbase, sometimes some of their games like say against Middlesborough or something, don't get aired on Sky or Setanta or any other channel, so why the hell can't the bbc/itv get those games?
