World cup favorites?

Post by Alfred on Fri Sep 04, 2009 3:26 pm

So maybe it's a little early to make predictions, especially when 9 months and 7 days are left for the world cup, but I really don't see teams making that many changes in the these months left. So who do you think is the world cup favorite? And how far do you think the US will make it this time around?

I don't think it's too early - it'll be fun seeing how this changes come the summer!

My early picks are Holland, England, and Brazil. I know, a bit surprising with Holland, but they have outrageously talented players and are due for a WC. England could finally pull it off under a manager that knows how to win.

All I have to say is it's going to be a hell of a year from Wesley Sneijder; first knocking out his former club to win CL and then winning the WC...

Brian I like your top 3. An underachiever won the Euros. Now an underachiever will win the WC, either Netherlands or England.

JUST KIDDING. the US will win, obviously. Boooobbbbbbb

i completely understand! i guess you can call me more of a fair-weather US fan...kinda pathetic? yes. but i love watching real football and i just don't see that in the US most of the time...European teams is where its at!

but of course if the US are doing well then i will support them no matter what team they go up against even if its spain or holland or brazil

Well I have a UK passport, but I hope England doesn't win the world cup lol. I'd much rather see a side like Spain or Holland get it. I think that if Iniesta and Xavi both make the world cup without injuries they're clear favorites. Argentina is of course my other favorite and the one I'd rather see win.

Taylor, how can you be a diehard soccer fan and not root for the US? Don't you want some respect for your country's team? It gets under my skin when people like Rio Ferdinand tell the media that soccer will never be big in the us ("no disrespect but they're just not interested"). I can't look at those players the same way again, Rio the main one that sticks out in my memory. We got some respect when we beat Spain, but the WC is ultimately where every national team is judged and remembered. The WC next year is incredibly important for the sport in this country, while we have all this momentum from the Confed Cup and the newfound relationship between soccer and ESPN. If we crash out in the group stage, all the perked up ears will go back down; but if we make at least the semis and play well, it will capitalize the momentum and go a long way to making the sport bigger in this country in every way. If you follow the sport at its highest levels and are content to never see that happen in your homeland, then fine you don't have to root for the US.

believe me pini...i will always root for the US but its so frustrating watching them play. they are capable of so much more than what they show out on the pitch. i would love to watch the US succeed at the highest level, but there is a lot better football to watch in other countries. until the US steps it up you won't find me watching the MLS at all or even the national team unless it's in the confed cup or the world cup. you would have a hard time convincing me to watch a qualifying match because i'm just not that into US soccer. i would much rather watch a Prem match over a US qualifier (but that's just me). I will always support the US though...just not in a diehard fan kind of way...more like a bandwagon fan kinda way.

It's exactly the same for us and England though Tay, let's be honest we have a whole squad of very good players, but we always look crap!! I hope Fabs gets off his auto-pick crap and starts givin the people a chance who look like they wanna play when they are on the pitch and aren't just there because of auto-pick!! USA aint as bad as people make out mate i remember watching them play Italy in the 06 world cup and they looked bloody brilliant (for the record i was rooting for Americans too!!!) i forget the score though to be fair, they either won, drew or lost and shouldn't have, either way they looked very good, but you should be patriotic and root for Us before anyone else!

I think we English get more irritated because we have the players, it just never works somehow, maybe starting 11 has something to do with it!!

I am a specialist of football betting and I reckon that spain will be the world champion or Brazil, in fact brazil wins it every 8 years so it might be their turn again.
