Matches on 8/29
Some great fixtures today.
Chelsea beat Burnley 3-0 in a convincing victory. Drogba and Anelka are the most dangerous front duo in the league by far.
Elsewhere around the league here are the current scores:
Tottenham 0-0 Birmingham...Tottenham looking really good thus far
Bolton 1-0 Liverpool...Davies with a tap in from a corner kick scramble
Blackburn 0-0 West Ham
Stoke 0-0 Sunderland
Wolves 0-1 Hull...Geovanni scores

Glen Johnson brilliant goal from a Liverpool corner.
Stoke also go 1-0 up over Sunderland.

Re: Matches on 8/29
Bolton back up 2-1 over Pool, Cohen volley after a Kevin Davies won header in the box knocked it down beautifully.
Re: Matches on 8/29
And Stevie G's thunderous volley appears to have won it for Liverpool.
Meanwhile Peter Crouch has rejuvenated Spurs at White Hart Lane with his goal, but Birmingham equalized just minutes later 1-1 in London.

Re: Matches on 8/29

Re: Matches on 8/29
quite a ridiculous game to watch (Man Utd v Arsenal), but i'm obviously happy with the outcome. not happy with the display united put on, but whatever. hopefully next week they will look more like the team that beat wigan 5-0.
Re: Matches on 8/29
Yeh i think Man Utd can consider themselves quite lucky that they've won that one. That being said, they did win it, and they get the three points, which is all that matters really. Chelsea look awesome. My prediction of them winning the title doesn't seem to far off .

The penalty was not a penalty, it was a dive.

Re: Matches on 8/29
By the book it was a penalty, and I have no complaints about it. But it was one of those where Rooney was going for the penalty and not the goal. He didn't touch it around Almunia, he kicked it into the stands and ran into Almunia's outstretched hands. Almost all keeper fouls are just like that. In my opinion.
Nice moment for Wenger at the end. I bet the crowd loved that.
Didn't get to see Liverpool today, but great to get the dramatic win. I mean, they SHOULD have won, but still.

Rooney was on his way down before any contact was made. If he's falling before contact was made then it's not a penalty.

Re: Matches on 8/29
Not sure where that's in the rules, Dani. So by that theory when Eboue blatantly dove at the feet of Evra, little old Patty could have kicked Eboue in the balls but there would be no call since he was already on his way down? Sounds a bit silly to me.
Whether the man is already falling, off balance, the ball is going out, or whatever, you don't have the freedom to take a man out and do whatever to him. Simple as.

Re: Matches on 8/29
If I were an Arse fan I'd be mad at Almunia for making a rash and unnecessary challenge like that when Rooney's touch was far too heavy.
Re: Matches on 8/29
Weird though, even from that angle it looks like Rooney is falling before contact!

Whether he is or isn't it doesn't mean Almunia can just take him down. If he was already falling then Almunia is an absolute idiot for letting there be contact. Look at how Patrice Evra pulled away from the diving Emmanuel Eboue.
Re: Matches on 8/29
Thats a blatant dive. You just don't fall like that naturally. There was only contact because rooney fell onto almunia. That being said the dive looked pretty real and was much better than Eduardo's. So top marks for Rooney's expert dive (Y)

Re: Matches on 8/29
I'd actually like to see what's in the official rule book. Like I said in my last post, I think most keeper-taking-a-man-down-in-the-box penalties are like this. The striker can feel it coming so he just kicks the ball ahead and makes sure his legs are in the keeper's path. But it would be interesting to see the official rules, because maybe they go by which infringement came first, in which case it would be a dive.

Re: Matches on 8/29
Oh man, that's huge. The letter of the law doesn't specify this specific instance, but here's a very interesting passage that suggests Rooney should have been carded:
"A player using a deliberate trick to circumvent the Law while he is taking a free kick is cautioned for unsporting behaviour and shown the yellow card...in such circumstances, it is irrelevant whether the goalkeeper subsequently touches the ball with his hands or not (in the event of a backpass). The offence is committed by the player in attempting to circumvent both the letter and spirit of Law 12" (40).
You can click on BlackburnBob's link for the entire thing, page 40. What I gather from this is that the moment someone commits an act of unsporting behavior, the play is dead and that player is cautioned. Applied to the Rooney penalty: The moment Rooney dives, if the ref decides that yes he did dive, the play is dead, and whatever Almunia does after the dive is thus irrelevant. Since Rooney started to dive before Almunia touched him (if that's the way you see it), it would be a yellow card for Rooney.

Wow well done (Y).
I still think Rooney should join the British olympic diving team. Should have strong competition from Ronaldo of Portugal though . Eboue should not, that was a freaking awful dive.

Re: Matches on 8/29
haha some Liverpool haters on youtube then?? That last one looked ok to me against Marseille. Anyways point remains, rules or not players look for it, if the balls running away go for a penalty, looking at Rooner and that video and Eduardo, it bloody well works so why wouldn't they?
This again adds to the debate of sideline video etc
