Ronaldo will reportedly earn £28.9m in the final year of his contract under terms offered by Real Madrid. That amounts to a massive £556,000 a week, but the Portuguese forward will have to make do with just £183,000 a week in the first year of his deal. Poor fella. No wonder he's describing it as a 'historic deal'

Money no object in the move then?

Not just Ronaldo but for me money in football is absolutely ridiculous! I would be happy with one weeks wages of most players for a year! Economic crisis around but these guys still take mega money home, something wrong there to me, my Grandad played for Leeds United before the war, he got £25 a week!!!

It does seem ridiculous. But I'll say, I think it's just a natural result of a very loosely-regulated market, which is the way to go-- anyway, any sort of socialism-trending regulation paramount to a salary cap, or transfer ceiling, would be very very difficult to enact in world football because of the individual rules of all the many leagues' governing bodies involved.

But on a personal level, I can't stand when teams in any sport buy championships. The Galacticos to me is a prime example of that-- they didn't cultivate their own talent through youth systems and scouting etc (aside from Raul and maybe a few others on those RMadrid teams). Perez threw a bunch of money at big players and they won trophies. That's exactly what he's doing now. I can't root for a team like that when they're up against a club like Barcelona, whose core team has been with them since they were teenagers (Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, for example). These players were developed by Barca from a young age, not bought for exorbatant amounts of money. So on a personal level, I hope RM wins absolutely nothing, and hopefully misses out on CL if that is at all possible, even though the economic system is the right one.

I completely agree with you!!! I'm going to connect this with something I am much more familiar with...and that is baseball. How can anybody root for the Yankees when they just open the checkbook and bring in half a billion dollars worth of players just like this season? Yes my Red Sox do spend their share of money, but in recent years not even close to what they Yanks have done. The Sox have won this players they have groomed through the farm system (youkilis, pedroia, lester, ellsbury, etc.). Even Beckett and Lowell technically came through the Sox system (they played in the system when the Portland Sea Dogs were owned by the Marlins, but now the Sox own them). That is why the Sox are a much more likable team compared to the hated Evil Empire!

What a great point JPini!
